Abstract

The article, is a result of the Cultural Spectacle in the Amazon (which is in progress) research. It examines an outstanding case of popular culture regulation conducted by the State during the Brazilian military dictatorship, in the street carnival of Belém do Pará. The empirical material - Allegories drawings, costumes and lyrics of the samba-plot of a local samba school, was submitted to the Federal Censorship - it represents a testimony that allows reflection on a movement that overlaps resistance and conformity, by showing the relationship between the community interaction of a samba school, the surveillance mechanisms and state control. In theory, it reflects on the issues of politics and spectacle demonstrated in the struggle for hegemony in the manifestations of popular culture.
