Abstract

This paper analyzed 87 newspaper reports published by the Brazilian journal O Estado de São Paulo (OESP) by through its political sources of information. The theme chosen was the “climate change” and the period analyzed corresponded to publications of 2009, when the COP-15 (15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - UNFCCC) happened. The importance of this meeting was associated with international expectations about the possibility of establishing new and more ambitious goals to reduce the hole in the ozone layer. This paper sought to understand how these sources of information provided the basis for the elaboration of the newspaper reports and which "discursive formations" (FOUCAULT, 1995) were important to the production of the journalistic texts. The theoretical and methodological basis of the research was found in sociological and philosophical theories (Bourdieu, 1998; Foucault, 1995); theories of Journalism (Traquina, 2005; Pinto, 1999); and, specially, in the French Discourse Analysis, highlighting the Pêcheux's theory (1995). The conclusions indicate that the OESP elaborated and legitimized its discourse, predominantly, by the use of official sources from the Brazilian federal government and from the scientific field. On the other hand, the reference to important social agents, as indigenous people or small farmers, was scarce.
